Quilts Credited With Keeping Special-Needs Students Focused

Granville Elementary School second-graders with special learning needs are getting help from an unexpected source.

Their teacher, Shellie Ryan, stumbled upon the idea to use quilts to calm the kids and help them focus.

“I had a child come in one day, and he’d had a rough day, and I just happened to have some quilts — my sister makes them — and I said, ‘Why don’t you wrap up in a quilt and I’ll read you a story?’” Ryan said. “And it was like that quilt was a magic rug. I wrapped it around him, I read to him, and he was calmer.
